ACFS Sydney Branch Hurricane Appeal
The Australia Cuba Friendship Society is issuing this appeal for funds to go to Cuba to assist in reconstruction work after the devastating damage from the recent hurricanes. We are directing the money through APHEDA, the trade union overseas humanitarian aid organisation that already has projects in Cuba such as the Cuban Children's Fund. APHEDA will direct the money to wherever we want to send it and the advantage of doing it this way is that the federal government matches every dollar collected by APHEDA with 30 cents, so it is a way of ACFS maximising our contribution.
You can pay directly through the APHEDA website at http://www.apheda.org.au/ and designate Cuba as the recipient of your donation or you can send contributions to ACFS at ACFS SYdney, PO Box K364, Haymarket, NSW 1240 with cheques made out to Australia Cuba Friendship Society, Sydney and an envelope clearly marked ACFS Sydney branch Hurricane Appeal. Please note that the biggest obstacle to reconstruction in Cuba is the US blockade which, as well as all the other devastation it has caused, prevents the purchase of essential materials from their nearest potential trading partner. See further information about:

What is ACFS?
The ACFS aims to promote and encourage friendship, understanding, trade and other exchange between the people of Australia and Cuba.

We organise a variety of politico-cultural events during the year culminating in the annual Work/Study Brigade to Cuba. This is a three-week visit to Cuba focussing on political, economic, cultural and social aspects of Cuba. The ACFS supports humanitarian projects in Cuba. An ACFS priority is to end the US blockade of Cuba.

The ACFS meets at 6.30pm on the first Thursday of every month (except January) at the NSW Teachers' Federation building, Level 1, 33 Mary Street, Surry Hills (map). Meetings are open to all friends of Cuba and those interested in finding out more about Cuba.

Membership of the ACFS is $20 ($10 unwaged) per year. Here is our membership form. There is also a western suburbs branch whose meetings are conducted in Spanish. There are also many other branches of the ACFS around Australia. See below for their contact details.

To contact us, write to secretary@sydney-acfs.org or PO Box K364, Haymarket NSW 1240.
